Make It A Habit!

There is a great quote that says:
Watch your thoughts because they become your words
Watch your words, because they become your actions
Watch your actions, because they become your habits
Watch your habits, because they become your character
Watch your character, become that becomes your DESTINY
If you think about the above you can see how true that is. When we think something, we often say it out loud to ourselves before we actually do it.
They are all linked.
However, just for a moment, I want to zero in on habits. Habits can either make or break you. They are the automatic behaviors we do without even thinking!
You can take the incredible power of habit and use it to your advantage.
Let me give you an example from my own life.
Anyone who knows me, knows I love timers. I figured that if something had a limited time period, I could do it. It all started when I was a stay at home mom of three, and no matter how hard I tried it seemed, I just could not keep the house clean or tidy with three little ones running around. Cleaning the whole house was overwhelming to me.
I stumbled across an article from a very successful woman about how she would put a timer on for 20 minutes a day, and would clean like crazy. When the timer went off, she was done. I tried it, and have never looked back! It has become a habit to me. I often get remarks from people when they come over like,
“Is your house always this clean and tidy?”
And for the most part, it is.
It’s simply because I harnessed the power of habit to do something I didn’t want to do, and now it’s just automatic.
I did the same when I wrote my first book a few years ago. I decided I was going to write for X amount of minutes per day. Slowly but surely, I finished my book.
That is the only way to truly become successful at anything in life I’ve realized. It’s all about making that thing a habit that you can do.
When it comes to taking care of you and your health I want to encourage you to harness the power of habit also. Those habits compound over time.
Recently I have realized that I have to start wearing sunscreen. I have to make it a habit. My dermatologist has STRONGLY recommended I wear it, and up until now I have ignored her advice simply because I can’t stand the smell of most sunscreen or how it feels on my face. However, I have realized that if I live another 30-40 years, that’s a lot of potential skin damage and with a few people around me recently who have been diagnosed with skin cancer, I realized I need to do this.
Our habits are vital to our well-being.
I want to encourage you to look at your habits, your good and bad ones, and really think how they will affect you over time. Now is the time to harness the power of habit, so they will help and not harm.
As for me, I’m going to make sunscreen part of my skincare habit, and I want to encourage you to get yearly check ups from your dermatologist and do the same.
Take care of yourself, much of your health and well-being depend on the habits you choose.
With love
Sue
